Mutton Masala Varuval / Mutton Varuval / South Indian Style Mutton Fry

Another non - veg delicacy from my mom's kitchen!  This coconut based spicy mutton preparation is very delicious and also easy to prepare; favorite of mine too!

This will be a best accompaniment as a side dish for rice paired with any gravy or rasam.

Ingredients:

Mutton - ½ kg
Onion - 2
Tomato - 1 (medium sized)
Turmeric powder - ½ tsp
Red chilli powder - 1½ tsp

To grind:
Coconut - ¼ cup
Fennel seeds / sanuf - 1 tsp
Ginger - 1" piece
Garlic - 4 to 5 cloves

For seasoning:
Oil - 1 to 2 tbsp
Cinnamon -1
Cloves - 3 or 4
Cardamom - 1
Curry leaves - 1 sprig

Directions:

Grind saunf, ginger, garlic and grated coconut with water to a fine paste; keep aside.

Finely chop onion and tomato and keep aside.

Take a pressure cooker; add mutton, turmeric powder, red chilli powder and grounded coconut paste along with water.

Give it a mix and close the lid; pressure cook for 4 to 5 whistles or till it becomes soft.

Heat oil in a kadai and season with cinnamon, cloves and cardamom; after it splutters, add the onions.

Sauté till the colour changes; add tomatoes and salt.  Stir well till the tomatoes becomes soft.

After that add the cooked mutton along with the masala in that and mix well.   Allow to cook till the water evaporates and masala becomes thick.

Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot.

Note:

Adjust the water quantity and spice level to suit your taste.

The cooking time depends upon the quality of mutton.
