Spicy Garlic Fish Fry / Garlic pepper Fish Fry / பூண்டு மிளகு மீன் வறுவல்

Try this garlic flavored, spicy fish fry as a starter / main course; which I learnt from my friend Preethi Jothivel.

Though I used to prepare fish fry often; this base ingredient is different with all flavorful ingredients like garlic, pepper & fennel!.  So I want to give it a try!  Yummy!

Recipe for Garlic Fish Fry
Recipe type: Main course
Cuisine:  South Indian 
Serves: 4  to 6 (approximately)

Ingredients:
Fish - 2 to 3 
Salt - to taste
Curry leaves - 1 sprig
Coconut oil / Vegetable oil - 2 to 3 tbsp
To grind:
Garlic - 6 to 8
Pepper - 2 tsp
Fennel seeds - 1 tsp
Turmeric powder - ½ tsp
Red chilli powder - 1 tsp
Tamarind paste / lemon juice - 2 tsp

Prawn Pepper Masala / Eral Milagu Thokku - Tamilnadu Style

Here is a spicy and flavorful treat for a all prawn lovers! This prawn dish will be a great accompaniment for rice along with dhal / sambar / rasam and curd rice. It will be a tasty accompaniment for dosa, appam and chapathi as well!


You can adjust the spice level and consistency according to your taste.

This recipe is in my to do list for a long time, which I noted down from TV show.  I made a slight changes in the preparation method and sharing it with you all. This spicy prawn pepper masala is now become one of the favorite dish in my family.

Recipe for Prawn pepper masala
Recipe type: Main course
Cuisine:  Tamilnadu
Serves: 3  to 4 (approximately)

Ingredients:
Prawns - 500 gms
Onion - 1 (finely chopped)
Tomatoes - 1(finely chopped)
Turmeric powder - ¼ tsp
Red chilli powder - ½ tsp
Pepper Powder - 1 tsp
Garam masala powder - 
¼ tsp
Salt - to taste
Curry leaves - 5 to 6 leaves
Oil - 1 to 2 tbsp


To grind & marinate:
Ginger - 1 " piece
Garlic - 5 to 6 cloves
Fennel seeds - ½ tsp
curry leaves - 1 sprig
Green chilli - 1

Fish Cutlet Recipe - Indian Style

Fish cutlet is a popular and tasty snack perfect for tea time or as a starter!  This is prepared using scrambled fish and potatoes along with spices; mostly deep fried.   Of course, shallow fried for those diet conscious!

It can be kept inside a burger bun or eaten as it is with tomato ketchup.  I prefer to prepare this as a starter for get-togethers / parties at home.

I am sure, it is a hit among fish lovers!


Yield : 10 to 12 medium sized cutlets (approx.)

Ingredients:

Shark fish fillets - ½ kg
Potato – 1 big (boiled and mashed)
Onion – 1 big (finely chopped)
Pepper powder –  
¾ tsp
Red chilli powder – ½ to 1 tsp (adjust to suit your spice needs)
Coriander powder - ½ tsp
Turmeric powder – ¼ tsp
Garam masala powder- 
½ tsp
Coriander Leaves – 1 tbsp (finely chopped)
Salt - to taste
Oil - 1 to 2tbsp

To Grind: 
Ginger -1“ piece
Garlic - 5 to 6 pods
Green chillies – 1 or 2

Others:
Oil – for deep frying
Bread crumbs – 1½ to 2 cups
All purpose flour / Corn flour - 2 table spoon

Shark Puttu / Fish Puttu / Sura Puttu, சுறா புட்டு / Scrambled fish stir fry

Shark / Sura (in tamil) Puttu is not an usual recipe in our household; however, we started liking it very much after tasting it in the house of my friend & neighbour, Rekha Sridhar.

She also helped me in preparing this yummy dish. Thank you Rekha!

Shark / Sura Puttu is an easy and delicious recipe using minimum ingredients, which are easily available in your kitchen. Kids will love this dish, because no fear of bones in it. You can also try this recipe using kingfish or any fish fillets; but with shark you will get the best taste.

Ingredients:

Garlic - 1 pod or 10 to 15 cloves (finely chopped)
Green chillies - 3 to 4 (finely chopped)

Kerala Style Prawn Roast / Fry

Try this spicy, juicy Prawn roast prepared in Kerala Style!


Ingredients:

Onion - 1 (Finely chopped)
Curry leaves - 1 sprig
Coconut oil / sunflower oil - 2 tbsp
To marinate:
Prawns - 500 grams 
Ginger garlic paste - 2 tsp
Red chilli powder- 1½ tsp(Adjust according to your spice level)
Corriander powder - ¾ tsp 
Pepper powder - 1 tsp
Turmeric powder - ½ tsp
Garam masala powder - ½ tsp
Curry leaves - 1 sprig

Fish Moilee / Meen Molee - Kerala Style Fish Stew

Fish Moilee or Meen Molee is a very popular Kerala fish stew / gravy cooked in coconut milk and spices. This is easy to prepare, mildly spiced and also flavorful fish gravy which goes well with appam or Idiyappam.

Ingredients:

Fish - 500 gm ( preferably select fish with less bones)
Onion - 1 big (sliced lengthwise)
Ginger -1 " inch piece (finely chopped)
Garlic - 5 to 6 (finely chopped)
Green chillies - 5 to 6 (slited length wise) 
Tomato - 1 large ( sliced)
Thin coconut milk - ¾ cup 
Medium thin  coconut milk -1 cup 
Thick coconut milk - ½ to ¾ cup 
Garam masala powder -½ tsp 
Salt - to taste

To Marinate:
Pepper powder -1 tsp
Turmeric powder -½ tsp 
Lemon juice - 2 tsp
Salt - as required

For Seasoning:
Coconut oil - 1 or 2 tbsp ( including for shallow frying the fish)
Cinnamon -1 
Cloves - 3 
Cardamom - 2
Curry leaves - 1 sprig

Eral Thokku / Prawn Masala - South Indian Style


This is a home-style South Indian prawn thokku / masala recipe which I learnt from my friend Rekha Sridhar.  It is a semi dry preparation and also easy to make;  you can serve this is a starter or accompaniment to rice paired with any spicy gravy or even with rasam,  it is delicious!

Anchovies Fish Fry / Nethili Fish Fry / Nethili Meen Varuval / நெத்திலி மீன் வறுவல்

Here a is crispy and tasty treat for Fish Lovers - Nethili Fish Fry!  Even beginners can try this recipe; cleaning process is also easy.



 Ingredients:

Nethili fish - 250 grams
Red chilli powder - 1 to 1½ tsp (Adjust according to your spice level)
Turmeric powder - ½ tsp
Lemon juice - 2 tsp
Ginger garlic paste - 2 tsp
Salt - to taste
Rice flour - 1 tbsp
Curry leaves - 1 or 2 sprigs
Oil - for shallow frying




Directions:

Wash and clean the fish pieces and pat dry.

Chettinad Prawn Masala / Chettinad Eral Masala

This semi dry prawn masala from chettinad cuisine is a great treat for spice lovers. This goes well with Indian breads as well as steamed rice; you can even use this as a stuffing in sandwiches.




Ingredients:

Prawns - 250 grams
Onion - 1(finely chopped)
Tomato - 1 small (finely chopped)
Ginger garlic paste - 1½ tsp
Green chilli - 2 (Finely chopped)
Red chilli powder- 1½ tsp (Adjust according to your spice level)
Pepper powder - ½ tsp(optional)
Turmeric powder - ½ tsp
Garam masala powder - ½ tsp
Curry leaves - 1 sprig 
Coriander leaves - for garnishing

To Grind:
Grated Coconut - 1½ to 2 tbsp
Saunf / Fennel seeds - 1 tsp 


Directions:



Peel the skin, devein and wash the prawns; keep aside. 

Grind the coconut and fennel seeds by adding water; keep aside.

Tuna Masala

Tuna fish contains high-quality proteins and is a good source of omega-3 fatty acids.  Here is an easy to make, delicious dish using canned Tuna.


Ingredients

Canned tuna fish - 1 (185 gms)     
Onion - 1 (finely chopped)
Tomato - 1 (finely chopped)
Ginger garlic paste - 1 ½ tsp
Green chilli - 1 or 2
Turmeric powder - ½ tsp
Red chilli powder - 1 tsp
Corriander powder - ½ tsp
Jeera (Cumin seeds) - 1 tsp
Salt - to taste 
Oil - 2 or 3 tsp

Directions

Drain the oil or water from the can and keep aside.

Heat oil in a kadai; add cumin seeds and chopped green chilli.  After it crackles, add the finely chopped onions. 

Saute till the colour changes; then add chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder, red chilli powder, corriander powder and salt.

Now add the drained tuna; saute for 2 minutes and mix well.

Then close the lid and allow it to cook in medium flame, till the fish is done (no need to add water). 

Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with chappati or use as a filling for Sandwich.

Chettinad Fish Curry

A tasty fish curry made with freshly ground spices from chettinad cuisine!





Ingredients

Kingfish -250 grams (clean and cut into desired shape)
Small onion -10 piece
Tomato -2 (finely chopped)
Garlic - 4 cloves
Turmeric powder – ½ tsp
Tamarind – 1 big gooseberry size
Curry leaves – 1 sprig
Oil – 1 tbsp

For seasoning:
Mustard seeds - ½ tsp
Fennel seeds (saunf) – ½ tsp
Fenugreek seeds – ¼ tsp

To dry roast and grind:
Red chillies - 5
Coriander seeds - 3 tsp
Pepper -½ tsp
Cumin seeds - ¼ tsp
Fennel seeds (saunf) – ¼ tsp
Cashew nut – 5
Coconut – 3 table spoon

Directions

Soak the tamarind in water in nearly 2 cups of water.  After sometime squeeze and extract the juice and keep it aside.

Take a kadai, add oil and season with mustard, fennel seeds, fenugreek seeds and curry leaves.

Once it splutters, add chopped onion, tomato, minced garlic with little salt. Sauté them nicely till the tomato melts.

After that add the dry roasted, ground spices, turmeric powder and tamarind water. Allow to boil till the raw smell goes; add fish, once the oil starts floating.

Cover and simmer for 5 minutes; add few curry leaves before removing from the stove and close with  the lid to enhance the taste

Allow it to rest for some time.

Serve hot with steamed white rice, idli or dosa.

Meen Kulambu / Fish Curry with Coconut - Amma's Special

Our home-style fish curry; family's favorite!    You can try this recipe in all kind of fishes; it suits well not just with rice but also Idli, Dosa, uthappam etc.



Ingredients:

Fish -10 piece (clean and cut into regular pieces)
Small onion - 8 to 10 piece
Tomato -1(chopped)
Garlic - 2 or 3 cloves(finely chopped)
Tamarind (puli) -1 big lemon size ball.
Coriander powder – 3 to 4 tsp
Chilly powder – 2 tsp
Turmeric powder - ½ tsp
Oil -2 tbsp
Salt - to taste


To grind:
Coconut -½ cup (grated)
Fennel seeds -
1/2 tsp
small onion - 3

For seasoning:
Oil - 2 tbsp(preferably gingelly oil)
Fenugreek seeds - 1 tsp
Fennel seed - 1tsp
Curry leaves - a few





Directions:

Grind coconut small onion and fennel seed with little water to fine paste.  keep aside.

Soak the tamarind in 2 cups water.

Take a wide kadai, add oil and season with fenugreek seeds, fennel seeds,curry leaves.



Once it splutters, fry the garlic, onion and chilli.   
Add the dry spice powders and fry for a few minutes, then immediately add tomato and salt.  If you think it is sticking to the pan add little water.

After tomato melts, add the tamarind extract and coconut paste.  Stir well and allow to boil and cook for 10 minutes.



Once oil leaves the sides of the pan, add fish.

Cover and simmer for 5 minutes and add few curry leaves before removing from stove and close the lid to enhance the taste.




Allow it to rest for some time .

Serve hot with steamed white rice, idli or dosa.




Note:

Adjust the water quantity and spice level according to your taste.
