Yam ( Chena ) Erissery / Erissery - Kerala Style / Ona Sadhya Recipes



Erissery is traditional veg accompaniment from kerala cuisine; prepared by adding vegetables in coconut paste and seasoned with roasted coconut.  You can prepare this dish by using plantain in combination with yam, pumpkin etc.

This is one of the popular and healthy dish which is a must ona sadhya.  Let's check the recipe for Yam Erissery.


Ingredients:

Yam – 2 cups cubed
Turmeric powder - ½ tsp
Salt - to taste

To grind:

Pepper - ½ tsp ( adjust according to your spice level)
Cumin seeds -¾ tsp
Grated Coconut - ½cup


For seasoning:
Coconut oil – 1 to 2 tbsp
Mustard seeds – ½ tsp
Urad dhal - 1 tsp
Dry red chillies – 2
Curry leaves – 1 sprig
Grated coconut – ¼ cup


Directions:

Grind coconut,pepper and cumin seeds by adding water into coarse paste and keep aside.
                           
Take a wide pan, add yam along with water and turmeric powder; cook till it is becomes soft.

Add the coconut paste, mix well and allow to cook for 2 to 3 minutes.  Switch of the gas.
In a separate pan, season with all the ingredients given under "For Seasoning" one by one.  Fry till the grated coconut turns golden brown colour.

Pour it over the chena / yam mixture; mix thoroughly.


Serve hot as a accompaniment for rice.

Note:

Adjust the water level according to the consistency you prefer.

You can also add plantain along with yam.
